Harry Styles 'Golden' Review

Just when we all thought 2020 was a goner, Harry Styles managed to pull another stellar music video out of the bag in the shape of ‘Fine Line’ opener, ‘Golden’. With his previous video to ‘Watermelon Sugar’ arguably being the soundtrack and visual inspo to our lockdown summer, you best believe ‘Golden’ is the much-needed pick-me-up for the dreary winter months.

Released after multiple teasers from HSHQ online, the video to uplifting track ‘Golden’ was set on the Amalfi Coast in Italy – a location I think we’d all like to be in right now. As for a storyline? It seems to be just having fun and loving life as it comes, which synchronises perfectly with the song’s theme being the point in a relationship where you say ‘I like you, you like me, let’s go with the flow and see what happens’...

There’s glorious running scenes, shots of Harry playing in the most crystal-clear water I’ve ever seen and points when he dances through the streets carefree and stops traffic while he’s at it. Everything about this video feels happy-go-lucky, chilled, and exciting and, I don’t know about you, but I think a lot of people will be here for those vibes.

If you’re into fashion, you will be also happy to know that the latest instalment of ‘Fine Line’ videos does not let you down. Pieces by Harry’s well-loved Gucci make regular appearances, including a light blue suit jacket, a stripey shirt and crochet driving gloves. Do I need crochet driving gloves? No. Am I going to look for a cheaper alternative just because Harry Styles wears them so well? You bet I am. As well as the incredible Gucci stylings, there’s also outfits created by newly graduated Steven Stokey-Daley littered throughout the video.

The loose white shirt, the iconic wide leg trousers from the promo shots and some other pieces featured in outtakes were all created by Steven for his Autumn/Winter collection. Styles showcasing up and coming designers, as well as established favourites, shows his love and dedication to dressing like possibly the coolest guy on the planet, as well as his music and lyrics. With the video amassing nearly 16 million views in 24 hours and it currently being #2 on Youtube’s trending page, it seems that everybody can’t get enough of it.

The success of the video thus far replicates the year of praise Styles has received since dropping Fine Line’s first video, ‘Lights Up’, last October. The previous 4 videos dropped have generated between 61 million and 141 million views on Youtube, he announced and exclusive date at The Forum in LA (which sold out), he received his first #1 single with ‘Watermelon Sugar’ and he won the ‘Chart Achievement’ Billboard award. As well as this, ‘Fine Line’ debuted at #1 in December 2019, making him the first UK male artist to debut at the top with their first two albums. It’s some good going for a man who’s start in the industry was coming third on The X Factor with four other boys.

As for the next year, Styles will embark on his highly anticipated ‘Love on Tour’, starting in Europe next February, with dates occurring all over the world. He is also set to release a limited-edition vinyl 1st anniversary version of ‘Fine Line’. This box set will include two LP’s, a 24 page ‘Fine Line at the Forum’ lyric zine and 10 glossy prints of the man himself shot by Tim Walker – and we can’t wait.
