‘Passive Aggressive’ is the latest release from London based singer GIRLI (also known as Milly Toomey). As her first release of 2021; the track sets off the year following a number of 2020 releases including ‘Letter to my Ex’, ‘Has Been’ and ‘LIVE THE WEEKEND’.
‘Passive Aggressive’ starts the year off with a bang. The track references two faced friends who are kind to your face but talk badly of you when you are not there. GIRLI tweeted “send this to anyone who’s ever talked nasty behind your back, and then acted super nice when they next saw you”. A scenario I’m sure many will be able to relate to to some extent.
The track has an upbeat, catchy rhythm; which even after just one or two listens will be stuck in your head. A tune that would not be out of place on a sunset festival slot, the crowd singing back loud, jumping up and down with a drink in hand. Lyrics such as “When my best friend told my other best friend that their other best friend don’t wanna be friends no more” and “you’re the lump in my throat and the knot in my chest”, perfectly capture that feeling uncertainty surrounding toxic friendships, and the anxieties felt as a result. The song has a relatability which is prominent throughout GIRLI’s music, and makes listeners keep going back for more.
In an interview with NME, GIRLI stated “there’s always going to be a place for a male indie-band, but it’s harder if you’re a female artist”. It is clear GIRLI is working to tackle such a largely male-dominated industry, bringing something different to the table; and developing her sound release after release.
Since first coming onto the scene aged 17, GIRLI has reached over 265,000 monthly listeners on Spotify; continuing to put out infectious tunes which tackle contemporary issues and debates prominent in society. For this reason it is unsurprising that she is one of the most exciting artists on the music scene to date.
‘Passive Aggressive’ is available now on all streaming platforms.
