‘Free your mind’ with Les Bods latest single

With an intro evoking the imagery of a crisp winter’s night displaying an eerie full moon, it is weirdly apt that Brighton garage rockers Les Bods’ new single ‘Free your mind’ was released on April 6th,  just as Britain was hit with harsh Arctic winds and sub-zero degree temperatures.

Les Bods first made a splash with their debut single ‘People’ back in April of 2020, and within six months it had amassed fans from some 70 different countries. The 3-piece’s success has even helped them sell out prestigious Brighton stages Green Door Store and Concorde 2. Their newest track, coming in at just under 3 minutes, follows their existing grungy, psychedelic style and is a fitting companion to their aforementioned debut effort.

This is a thoroughly well-produced piece, (produced, mixed, and engineered by Rob Quickenden) finding the right balance between sonic clarity and their grungy, earthy, muddy sound. The vocal mix is also strong and avoids being drowned out by the screeching guitars or the rumbling bass, which can be an issue on tracks in this genre. Dick Beetham (Alt-J, Drenge, Rhodes, Girls Aloud, Craig David) is also credited with mastering the track.

A repeating baseline, first heard in the eerie guitar in the intro, is echoed continuously throughout the track, giving the song a cyclical, unrelenting feeling. The opening lyrics, crooned by singer Harry Mitchell: “free your mind, free your mind from everything around you, take two hits, take a hit of the sweet leaf and get inside you” invite the listener to melt away from the mundanity of everyday life and “everything around”, to fall deep into their latest release instead.

With influences from bands such as Ty Segall and Oh Sees cited, it is clear to see where they get the inspiration for their catchy guitar riffs and psychedelic sound. You’ll be able to hear their new tune in person later this year, as the boys from Brighton are slated to hit the road with The Howlers in September of 2021.
