Nostalgia is a powerful tool, and can be very efficient if used properly. This is what we get from Holiday Ghosts’ new single, ‘Off Grid’. It was released on the 18th of March 2021, and was accompanied by a music video.
The track begins with a strumming rock ‘n’ roll opening riff, reminiscent of the late 1960’s, 70’s and early 80’s. Right off the bat, a distinctive rhythm sends an adrenaline rush that engages with you and then something happens. You find it hard to point out what it is. Before you even begin to figure it out, you realize that you are grooving to it.
Whilst the guitar ignites the flame and catches your attention, it’s the bass section alongside the drums in the background that really makes you groove. The strumming continues and you watch as you get taken away in a nostalgic trip to the past. The vocals then take over and enhance the experience even further. The vocal melody adds a new dimension in this nostalgic trip, as you can almost feel Katja and Sam’s voice speaking to you. It feels as if they are your guide and are taking you on this trip.
‘Off Grid’ is one of the tracks from Holiday Ghosts’ new album ‘North Street Air’, which is due for release by FatCat records on the 21st of May, 2021. Similar to their previous works, ‘Off Grid’ focuses on themes of displacement and disconnection from daily life. In most of their songs, Holiday Ghosts have experimented with these themes. Yes, they have drawn influences from old-school music, but they’ve also showcased ingenuity in the way they blend old-school music with their usage of modern themes. Perhaps this is why the disconnection works for them.
The song is accompanied by 11 other tracks including their opening single ‘Mr. Herandi’, which was released on the 11th of February, 2021.
