The 20-year-old Chelmsford artist has safely secured and built her following since her first release last year, Words Around. She has also received backing from BBC Introducing and planted her foot firmly in the door through her covers of songs from the likes of Billie Eilish and The 1975.
The new single sees the return of her calming, angelic tones paired with a steady beat and a composition that closely mirrors the style of Taylor Swift.
Talking about the track, Katy divulges: “City was written just after I turned 18. It’s a song about heartbreak, but I also wanted to try to capture how overwhelming it can be to throw yourself into new experiences and process new emotions. It’s a mix of infatuation and nostalgia with a side of uncertainty.”
City is a clear indication of the singer’s lyrical abilities and her maturity when storytelling, alongside her talent in the production of a simple yet sophisticated and stylish track. The meaning behind the music is surely one that younger generations can resonate with, and therefore allow the artist to flourish.
Placed alongside the comforting, and somewhat consoling, tones of both guitar and the subtle backing instrumentation, the tune has been released at the perfect time to soundtrack the coming summer months.
Despite the emotional qualities that can be heard through Katy For Kings’ emotive vocals, the melodies complement each other perfectly to give the singer yet another wholesome, refined addition to her discography.
With fanbases escalating across all platforms, the singer is excelling at such a young age and is undeniably on the rise. Wherever it may be that Katy For Kings chooses to take us on her next release, it is sure to be promising and will undoubtedly build on her already acquired success.
