Movie Club are back with their newest single, ‘Trap Door’. The track is a single taken from their upcoming EP, ‘Fangtooth’ which comes out later this year on August 10th.
The instrumental rock duo are best known for their minimalist sound, and for fusing a variety of rock, including punk, psychedelia and post-rock, creating an idiosyncratic sound that is truly irresistible.
Movie Club are from all the way across the pond in Venice Beach, California and features Jessamyn Violet on drums and Vince Cuneo on guitar.
‘Trap Door’ opens with a perfectly ordinary guitar intro from Vince, accompanied by a sinister background riff that sounds like it was taken directly from a horror movie. Jessamyn then joins in with a steady drumbeat which builds up tension, as you’re not quite sure which direction the duo will take the track.
Movie Club certainly didn’t disappoint as the build-up is then followed by a loud and energetic guitar solo. The track then slows down a little, allowing you to catch your breath before diving straight back into the madness. ‘Trap Door’ undeniably tells a story within itself, the combination of slower and faster paces keeps you hooked until the end.
Having a deep love for film, the duo produce and direct their music videos for each single, which illustrate their visual and artistic influences. ‘Trap Door’ is no stranger to this, and the cinematic masterpiece most definitely matches the energy that is felt throughout the music.
It's safe to say that ‘Trap Door’ most definitely makes an impression, it just goes to show you don’t need vocals to produce something special. That's the beauty of an instrumental with no vocals, you never know where you will end up.
