The Gulps Leave Us ‘Stuck in the City’

Gothic Rock as a genre hasn’t seen as much appreciation as it deserves - encompassing some of the globe's greatest musicians including Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure and The Smiths.

The genre is finally getting a well-needed showcase thanks to The Gulps, an electrifying power pop band that has some clear influences in ‘Stuck in the City’.

The song starts with an incredible use of panning that bounces around the eardrums, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, and the accelerando only further reinforces this tense aura. The vocals arrive onto the scene and those gothic rock influences hit with full force. There’s some The Cure and Bowie inspiration in the vocals here, and mixed with the faster paced traditional rock tempo - it works absolute wonders.

‘Stuck in the City’ is a song with a huge personality. With its fast paced-guitar riffs, and clear gothic-rock influences alongside its early ‘00s rock structure, it’s a track that manages to accomplish a lot in its short five-minute run time.
