Done! Florence + The Machine Dazzle With New Floorfiller ‘My Love’

Florence + The Machine recently announced that the title of their upcoming fifth studio album would be ‘Dance Fever.' ‘My Love’ - the third single to be released from the record - certainly proves that to be a very apt name.

In many ways, it showcases exactly what the group does best. Whether they are tackling ballads or beats, they always retain a sweeping and cinematic musical quality, firmly anchored by the power and emotion of Florence Welch’s voice.

These qualities are all used to great effect in this new track, which possesses an inherent sense of euphoria. There’s no doubt that ‘My Love’ will sit nicely next to other numbers, such as the Calvin Harris remix of ‘Spectrum’, on dancefloors and in clubs - but wherever it is heard, it is sure to be infectious. The sheer strength of this part of the song is enhanced by Welch’s anguish, as for a dance-influenced song, ‘My Love’ is very lyrically introspective.

From the outset, it builds up a tale of love and the confusion it can bring; “I was always able to write my way out/The song always made sense to me/Now I find that when I look down/Every page is empty.” Navigating these feelings can be something of a minefield, and so it proves in the chorus, acting as an outpouring of all of Welch’s thoughts, a plea for answers from a higher power; “So tell me where to put my love/Do I wait for time to do what it does?” This is the point at which Welch unleashes her full vocal range, and in addition to the steady beat and instrumentation, it lifts ‘My Love’ to new heights. Listeners will surely be hoping these can be matched by the rest of ‘Dance Fever’ - described by Welch as “a fairytale in 14 songs” - and they won’t have long to wait, with the album due for release on 13 May.
