For American duo elison, experimentation was the word of the day. However, it seems as though the pair have found a coherent sound in the first single of their double release, ‘Little Lies’. Following the success of their debut track ‘Meet Me Halfway’ and subsequent release ‘Hopes and Horoscopes’, this song and its co-release ‘Light And Day’ mark an exciting new level of success for elison.
Formed by Marissa Kephart and Scott Yoshimura, the band has come a long way from their humble Iowa roots. They’ve captured the hearts of listeners with their perfectly executed dream-pop music. Blending soft vocals and beautiful soundscapes, listeners will no doubt find them on par with the likes of Japanese House and Oh Wonder.
‘Little Lies’ opens with soft pads which form the base of their soundscape. From the first bar the listener is transported into a dreamlike state. Conducive to elison’s needs, this trance primes the listener to better grasp the tone and meaning of the song. Speaking of little lies that are built in and around a relationship, this song is beautiful and nuanced.
The layers that surround the core message naturally aid in transmitting it. The percussive elements, that feature what could be perceived as slight delays, add variety and interest while never stealing focus. Kephart’s warm and ethereal vocal tone helps further lull the listener and help them settle into the tune. Deeper, richer synth and bass notes help the song come to a climax before bringing one back to a calm.
What is especially commendable is that all of these elements convey a truly heart-breaking and relatable story. How is it that a song as soothing as this one could so beautifully encapsulate emotions
such as mistrust, betrayal, uncertainty and desperation? A mystery for the ages. A mystery that is begging to be solved.
‘Little Lies’ and ‘Light And Day’ are now available to stream on all platforms.
