Yorkshire-born, but currently residing in Japan, singer-songwriter, Bryan Cooper pays homage to his guitar idols, Coxon, Squire, Greenwood, Frusciante, and Butler through soulful introspections intertwined with raw instrumentation and rock ‘n’ roll energy.
Having toured previously as a member of other bands, Cooper’s solo venture sees his return with his latest sonic feat ‘Heroes Let You Down’. Cooper highlights his uncanny ability to pen and composing timeless tracks that dabble in sardonicism and take jabs at modern life.
Acting as his sophomore single, ‘Heroes Let You Down’ begins as a slow burner before reaching its crescendo in a climax of full-throttle guitar lines and soaring vocalisations. The cut focusses on a narrative of celebrity idolatry, and how unhealthy obsessions can spiral into a ‘worship syndrome’. Delicately straddling the line between ambient guitar music and vibrant rock, Cooper delivers savvy dabblings whilst not veering too far from his ‘90s inspirations.
Accompanied by enigmatic visuals shot on the streets of Japan (Tenjin, Fukuoka City), the camera (directed by Joao Faria) follows the protagonist, Cooper on his journey through the city as the video switches between societal observations and focussing on the guitarist.
Talking about his career so far, Cooper divulges; “Performing as a solo artist was like starting again for me. There’s a lot more plates to keep spinning. But it’s been a great learning curve. I’ve been playing low-key live shows, trying out new songs and knocking them into shape. I feel totally ready for the next phase now.”
If the release of ‘Heroes Let You Down’ is anything to go by, 2022 is set to be an exciting year for the Yorkshire solo artist.
