It put the Irish punk-rock outfit firmly on the radar for those who love bold, innovative sounds. Sometimes seen as part of a wave of new music that includes usual suspects like IDLES and Fontaines D.C., they have become known for their soulful lyrics, broad and stripped-down sound, and emotional live performances. They are now back after a lengthy silence, with new single ‘Only Good Things’.
All of the familiar The Murder Capital trademarks are still there, from James McGovern’s heartfelt vocals, the bass line weaving throughout the music an the rippling little guitar riffs (the one opening the song is an excellent example of the latter). But, there is also a newfound vibe to this track, a more polished sound that was not there in the band’s previous work. It is a precision that has something of classic rock, evoking even a hint of Lou Reed; in a sense, this is almost The Murder Capital’s own ‘Sunday Morning’.\
With joyful, optimistic lyrics, a sharp production, and an invitingly clear sound, this is a perfect track for the summer and a much needed one in a time when a sense of gloom can often feel overwhelming. It is also a return that leaves no doubt as to the fact that The Murder Capital know full well what they’re doing, and are not scared of treading new paths.
