Scott Powell (vocals, bass), Luke Brightmore (drums), James Corbishley (lead guitar), and Josh Egan (guitar) are four genuine guys from Stoke-on-Trent who enjoy sneaking into festivals from time to time to sing their tales to anyone strolling around the stages.
They form the honest indie four-piece Camens, and they’ve just delivered a freshly painted track called ‘Illustrator’.
Camens’ candied energy unfolds through the nearly ingenious lyricism held in ‘Illustrator’ as Scott sings, “Draw me happy if you need a little pick me up / Draw me sad if today gets too tough”. The upbeat bridge then rises in a festive riff with buzzy guitars and exciting drums, turning the song into a big smiley picture. The official lyric video for ‘Illustrator’ brings Californian and urban vibes, whilst ‘Poltergeist,’ released earlier this year, stands darker and gloomier. Framed together, though painted with opposite colours, these two songs suggest the idea of unconditional tender love and protection.
The Stoke-based band might have run past a rebranding process and, as stated on Spotify, “a fair share of false dawns,” but Camens has clearly committed to recording music that feels real and simple from the start. ‘Illustrator’ healed us from this complicated world even for just a few minutes, and we are enthused about seeing Scott, Luke, James, and Josh live this fall on Camens’ tour across the UK.
