In a move that only seeks to confirm Lil Nas X’s already legendary status, the pop icon has teamed up with the popular fantasy game League of Legends to create ‘Star Walkin’’.
Within the game, the track is being called the “world’s anthem”; in other words, it is the theme song for the upcoming League of Legends video game tournament.
League of Legends is a multiplayer fighting game, wherein teams take on one another as two sets of different champions. It is one of the most popular video games of the 2000s and still maintains hefty acclaim and a semi-cult following. Because of this, and Lil Nas X’s unwavering popularity, this collaboration is immense in both musical and gaming spheres.
The song itself tells of the exhilarating experience of playing the game, which should resonate with many listeners. Speaking of the game’s purpose, to fight the other team, often to the death, Lil Nas chants, “They said I wouldn’t make it out alive / They told me I would never see the rise, That’s why I gotta kill ‘em every time”.
Players have also spectated that the song alludes to Mount Targon, a tall peak within the game that only the strongest and most determined players can reach. This is reflected in the lyrics, “Racin’ to the moonlight and I’m speedin’ / I’m headed to the stars, ready to go far”, and, “On a mission to get high up, I know that I’ma die / Reachin’ for a life that I don’t really need at all”. The production feels perfect for a fantasy game, with thumping electro beats and coursing sounds that pass through headphones as if you were travelling through galaxies. The track comes ready with an animated music video, directed by Wesley Louis. The video depicts characters being called up to the game, as well as the different champions you can find within the game and, of course, the League of Legends Summoner’s cup, which players will fight to win. Aside from the cup, a massive cash prize is also up for grabs for the winning team.
The track hasn’t been immune to criticism, with some players taking to Twitter to comment on how the track is too “slow” for a combat game. However, Lil Nas X has spoken about the importance of this collaboration for some of his fans. Speaking with Apple Music, the star said, “For whatever reason, I have a huge gamer fan base, and this is sick for them.” This will also make his newly appointed role as honourary President of League of Legends all the more exciting for those fans.
With the world championship tournament beginning next week, and continuing into November, there’s plenty of time to make ‘Star Walkin’’ your new favourite track.
