Following on from their wildly popular 2020 album ‘So When You Gonna’, Dream Wife has released their sucker punch new single ‘Leech’.
A defiant and unapologetic challenge of power structures, ‘Leech’ shakes us to the core and reminds us exactly how crucial it is to “Have some fucking empathy” in the modern day. The three-piece female powerhouse delivers their message of unity, strength and female-led support for one another amidst patriarchal power structures and ‘Leech’ like figures that “Suck the blood from those who truly know how to love.”
Throughout the track, the band highlight how easy it is to be taken advantage of by people in positions of power or influence. Questioning: “Do you use and abuse your power to young women? That listen to what you say?” and “Do you hide behind the position you hold / Do you hide behind the illusions of power / The perception of power…”
The track warns of a darker and more sinister side to life today and encourages us to challenge unjust behaviours and actions and stand strong in the face of adversity. ‘Leech’ is a cry for empathy and compassion in the world and is an artful offering of calling our power back and not tolerating being told no or to wait our turn. “Be patient wait your turn, fuck that. I will support my girl” A female anthem for strength, echoing similarities between L7, and Bikini Kill, the piece directly calls out the double standard of power and gender roles and gives a voice to inequality.
In a statement about the single the band said: “It’s an anthem for empathy. For solidarity. Musically tense and withheld, erupting into angry cathartic crescendos. The push and pull of the song lyrically and musically expands and contracts, stating and calling out the double standards of power. Nobody really wins in a patriarchal society. We all lose. We could all use more empathy. As our first song to be released in a while, we wanted to write something that feels like letting an animal out of a cage. It’s out. And it’s out for blood…”
