Lana Del Rey’s history of promising singles stays true with the release of ‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean blvd’, the lead single from her upcoming album of the same name, set to be released in March next year.
Just over a year after the release of her gut-wrenching eighth studio album, ‘Blue Banisters’, Lana has announced the next addition to her impressive ensemble – and if the recently-released self-titled track is any inclination of its content, this record will be nothing short of incredible.
The single does not disappoint as Lana sticks to her strengths, drawing on the successes of her well-received discography, as well as risky, yet carefully crafted theatrics that add some crucial flavour to the track – turning it somewhat into an arena anthem.
The opening lulls us in with the familiar autumnal piano before a set of strings pitch in to introduce the vocals. Here we are struck with typical Lana, who strings together sombre, rising vocals along with her usual charm that we’ve already become acquainted with. Employing some background vocalists, they provide a unique tone that we’re not used to hearing in Lana’s work, heightening the song with their raw, powerful feel.
Flowing through these vocals are the puncturing lyrics that are at the core of Lana’s discography, exploring her stint of loneliness, with the refrain of “When’s it gonna be my turn?” and “Don’t forget me” being so easy to overlook at first listen, even considering the weight they carry. It’s a bittersweet and relatable theme, as you can’t help but empathise with Lana throughout this great song, who even compares herself to the faded, unused tunnel she revolves the track around.
‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean blvd’ is due for release on March 10th 2023, and excitement for the album only reinforces that Lana is far from fading away, instead being here to stay.
