Distant Blue show their talent by experimenting with those classic rock sounds as well as using original music from the 1951 ‘Alice in Wonderland’ movie to open their record. The eery and blurred sample immerses listeners into Wonderland before smashing drums and guitar riffs with heavy vocals alongside. The track then follows with a somewhat hazy sound to the vocals before the perfectly produced sound blasts through.
Vocalist and guitarist from the band Ed Binding explains that ‘‘You can chase a song idea almost like chasing a rabbit who’s late, and as soon as you notice the oddities and strange details in it, you feel compelled to follow it all the way down the rabbit hole.’’ Which is the perfect way to describe this track. The single lures you into the sounds and progresses beautifully like a story. The highlight of the song for me is the chimes you hear during the middle of the song. You’re listening to a heavy, grungy piece and suddenly you hear some earthy, elegant and joyful chimes which adds so much juxtaposition to the record. The lyrics are also perfectly placed with emphasis on the lines ‘All mad here' to remind the listener they’re not just listening to a song but they’re in a fairy tale too.
This single is a super exciting release from Distant Blue and showcases their musical talent perfectly. Cheshire Smile by Distant is released on January 13th 2023.
