Soup! Deliver Their Piping Hot New Single ‘Supplies’

Even only being two years into their musical career, it is safe to say Soup! know how to serve up contemporary post-punk to a hungry audience. With ‘Supplies’ the band displays a funky edge to their usual colourful stew of sound.

As with many Mancunian artists surrounded by up-and-coming alternative talent , the city’s music scene is as much a part of Soup! as they are of it.

For five bedroom-bound teenagers jamming Buzzcocks and The Stooges, their featuring on UK festival lineups throughout 2022 - including Leeds, Neighbourhood Weekender and Manchester Psych Fest - must seem like a fever dream. The band has made quite a stir among critics with the likes of NME and Louder Than War commending their ability to make a time-honoured genre their own.

Recorded at Airtight Studios, Soup!’s fifth single to date, ‘Supplies’, leans decidedly into jangle pop with angular guitar riffs from Connor Riley that would have made Orange Juice proud. The track deploys dynamic drums peppered with open hi-hats while listeners are spoon-fed Hayden Gouveia’s propelling bassline.

Matthew Beswick hones his sprechgesang execution on this new single. Lyrics like “They don’t care / No one really cares / You’ve lived your life tending to an empty garden setting” sees the frontman caught hopelessly between watching someone make themselves unhappy and knowing only they can take steps towards change.

Without warning the track is turned on its head as a spacey synth hook initiates a solemn stripped back outro. Not too hot, not too cold, but just right - ‘Supplies’ is another commanding single by Soup! which earns them a place at the helm of a burgeoning musical movement.
