Following the popular release of her latest album, ‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd?’, American solo artist Lana Del Rey shares with fans an extended music video for her single ‘Candy Necklace’.
The song features fellow soloist Jon Batiste, who is both a Julliard graduate and a five-time Grammy-winning artist.
Directed by Rich Lee, the music video for the song is quintessentially Lana, delivered to fans in an all-black and white, vintage-esque way. As the initial piano fades in, we’re greeted with a ‘behind-the-scenes’ set up, with Lana herself ‘driving’ a car – before the camera pans out and the reality of the car as a prop on a filming set is revealed. Within the first minute, the shooting ends, and in-fades a conversation between the artist and her team. ‘Candy Necklace’ and its accompanying music video instantly becomes an intimate affair, then, as we are given access to the wider context in terms of all that is involved in the process of creating a finely polished set of visuals. The music fades back in, and Batiste is introduced to the musical narrative, as he can be seen playing the piano while Del Rey continues to sing.
In the fourth minute, Lana is shown explaining her motive behind the inclusion of ‘behind-the-scenes’ footage. The artist declares that the reason the video shares extra footage is because ‘all these women who change their name, change their hair, like me, all fall into different snake holes. The whole point is, how do you learn from that and not fall into your own thing?’ After this, we see Del Rey herself trying on different wigs – different versions of herself, perhaps.
Alluring, captivating, and all-around glamorous, the music video finally fades into colour around the ninth minute, where Del Rey is seen posing with her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The final minute and a half consists of a film-like set of credits, reminding us that Lana is one of Hollywood’s very best contemporary artists. As she says so herself in the song’s lyrics, "You’ve been acting pretty restless, / Dancing like the young and reckless".
