Catchy, romantic, and nostalgic. The trio of words that best describe the music and world of Canadian singer-songwriter Chloe Mayse.
Inspired by the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Billie Eilish, Mayse's discography is steeped in infectious poppy cuts and deeply poetic lyricism.
With the release of newest track, 'Mad In Love', we caught up with Chloe to find out more...
Hey Chloe! How’re you?
Hey! I am doing well, how are you?
I'm great thanks! Let’s start at the beginning - how did you get into music?
I got into music because my dad had this 12-string Fender acoustic guitar that he would sometimes mess around on when I was little. I just remember being really mesmerized by the sounds the guitar made and I knew when I got a little older I wanted to try and learn to play. I was also a really shy and quiet kid, so when no one was around I used to sing to myself. My mom said I started doing that around the age of 2 or 3.
Are there any particular musicians who’ve shaped the artists you’ve become?
What’s the music scene like in Canada?
Any favourite artists you can recommend to our readers?
Currently, I have been listening to a lot of Boygenius songs, Labrinth, and Girl In Red.
Talk to us about your newest release 'Mad In Love'.
'Mad In Love' is a song about when I was in my first relationship and my love for this person was so intense and somewhat unhealthy because I was not mentally stable and I depended on my relationship to keep me happy. Your first serious romantic relationship is always the most intense and passionate relationship, in my opinion. I fell in love with my friend and we had a great 3 years together but we wanted different things in the relationship and I couldn't handle that fact. In the last year of our relationship I got diagnosed with a depression disorder and had to be on medication. It wasn't easy for my girlfriend at the time to have to take care of me and I think in the long run it was best for us to part ways, but that relationship still inspires me today.
How does this differ from your previous releases? What have you learned from the music writing process that you’ve carried on into this track?
What does the future hold for Chloe Mayse?
My future goals right now are to keep working on gaining more fans and pushing my music out there and working on my live show.
Sum up your sound in three words!
Catchy, Nostalgic, Romantic
