Pet Needs, the Colchester-formed alternative punk quartet, release their latest record ‘Separation Anxiety’ with a guarantee to get the blood pumping and the party going. Formed by brothers George and frontman Johnny Marriott, the group also includes Jack Lock and Rich Gutierrez.
The track begins with a fast and raging riff on guitar before the drums and bass enter the frame, igniting an explosive song that takes fans to a bygone era that surely should be revived, if only for a brief period. The dynamics fluctuate from section to section, adding more importance to the deliverance of lyrics such as “I loved you even more than that dog does / I’ve been trying to behave myself cause they told me to behave myself” and “If separation anxiety is the price to pay for me loving you”.
Overall, this is a fast-paced powerful punk anthem tinged with romance given its subject matter - Johnny’s wife, Lorna. The song abruptly cuts off after three minutes of relentless riffs and beat-blasting, taking its audience on a rollercoaster of emotions and leaves them pining for more. The guys have successfully fused early noughties indie rock with ‘70s punk to create their own unique sound, resonating with many people and continuing to reach new audiences since its launch.
They are currently on a UK tour unveiling their latest material - so what better way to get in the festive spirit than to treat yourself to some not-so-Christmassy headbangers?
