Ghost Drop Throwback Track

Yep, you read that right - Ghost have spectacularly unearthed a brand new, old song! The recently uncovered track, 'The Future Is A Foreign Land', has further made it on to the ‘Rite Here Rite Now’ soundtrack, which is the first-ever feature length movie starring the Grammy winning band from Sweden.

The spectacular new Ghost film itself, combines live performances from Ghost's sold-out Kia Forum shows in LA (September 2023) with a narrative story that picks up plot threads from the band's long-running webisode series.

The 1969 song was written by the first frontman of the band, Papa Nihil, who was originally thought to have written only two songs (‘Mary On A Cross’ and ‘Kiss The Go-Goat’). The three minute forty-five second song, opens discussing 1984, 15 years into the future, after the 1969 song was originally penned.

Listening to this track it's immediately recognisable. Fitting right at home with 2019's 'Seven Inches of Satanic Panic' featuring Papa Nihil's previous songs,  all with an identifiable 60's sound. ‘The Future Is A Foreign Land’ is certainly softer and jazzier than recent outputs from Ghost and has a distinct 60s swing vibe about it. It gives the feeling of being sat at a beach side diner with the track on the jukebox.

The single skips forward to fifty-five years after 1969. The bridge of the song, with its more haunting melody, repeats 2024 several times, giving thought to what the year could bring. The song is likely an apology from Nihil to Sister Imperator. After she had left him, due to his on stage kiss with an audience member, which we remember from ‘Kiss The Go-Goat’.

Referencing 1984 and the lyrics “Brownshirt Stasi guard” appears to be a nod to an oppressive Orwellian future - Perhaps to the similarities of indiscretions and betrayals or it could be a note to simply just enjoy life, embrace it and make things the best you can. How such a well crafted tune was lost for fifty-five years, we may never know. Perhaps it was only ever intended for one person's ears?

The full motion picture soundtrack will be released on July 26 via Loma Vista Recordings.
