Following the release of his most recent album, '10 For The People', Jamie Webster proves once more that he is a man of the people with latest single 'Breadline’.
Not only is he a great singer-songwriter, but he is also a storyteller, as he creates a character who's going through a difficult time in their life, living in poverty, and losing a loved one: "I've got nothing at all / Over the summer / I lost a brother".
This folk/pop acoustic track is broken up into three parts, depicting the character's journey. The song starts out with only Webster and his guitar. His coarse but distinct voice shapes a picture of loneliness and sorrow. He hits you with the harsh reality of so many people's lives, perfectly captured by the pain in his voice.
In the second verse, as the drums kick in, he creates a spark of hope, the opportunity of leaving all the worries behind and starting a new life: "The tides are turning / An offer came to take me from these streets". The tune ends with the strong belief that there will definitely come a time where they will end the cycle of poverty and turn their back to the breadline: "This don't have to be forever / One day a change will come".
'Breadline' encapsulates Jamie's brilliant way of drawing in the audience, leaving them hopeful and letting them stay with the character, wishing that everything turns out in their favour.
Webster has also dropped a music video for the single, following him along through and offering a behind-the-scenes peek into the recording process.
Thank you for this insightful and well-thought-out review!
