The indie/alternative rock project Wildlings presents their brand new single, ‘Sugar’, a nostalgic anthem familiar to Iggy Pop and The Smiths, cleverly combining sombre undertones, eccentricity, and societal commentary.
‘Sugar’ is narratively complex, delving into the necessity of feeling safe and secure to thrive, while also offering a satirical critique of commercialism. It serves as a poignant reminder of how we can sometimes lose focus on what truly matters. This is artfully conveyed through emotive and honest lyrics such as: “we don’t need these distractions / distraction from what really matters / From Friends, from foundations, from peace and love and the human condition”.
The track begins with a ticking clock rhythm that gradually fades into a rolling chord progression, steadily building up before erupting into an explosion of energy. The drums burst into a vibrant, heavy beat that screams rock 'n' roll, while the guitar arrangement adds a country-like twang, creating a rich contrast and dynamic sound. This blend provides the perfect backdrop for the expressive vocals where a blend of speaking and singing elevates the speech’s tone creating a melodic notion.
Wildlings have crafted a simple track layered with deeper meanings. Though brief, ‘Sugar’ is a piece to be admired and revisited, offering a reflective and enjoyable listening experience.
