Introducing the freshly formed Holy Fool. Realised by Scottish actor Lorne MacFayden (Vigil, Starstruck, Malpractice), and with the addition of musician Joshua Woolf, Holy Fool have been reaching new heights since their debut single ‘Winter Coat’ released in June 2023.
Including radio play from BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland, and numerous features on editorial playlists, they couldn’t have asked for a stronger start.
Their latest single ‘On A Sunday’ adds to a strong collection of alternative garage rock anthems. ‘On A Sunday’ sees MacFayden take the reigns on the vocals and guitars, whilst Woolf is responsible for the bass, keys, and production. A blending of these talents creates a more instrumentally focused track, utilising the best of an acoustic lead fused with electric inflections injected throughout.
‘On A Sunday’ primarily pulls on their alternative foundations but adds flavours of indie-rock, making it a truly catchy earworm of a song. Lyrically, it appears to discuss the notorious Sunday blues, perfectly painting those nagging feelings in a more poetic manner, “on a Sunday / you can lose your head / when you’re feeling blue” and “you’re just an ocean going down the drain / it’s spreading around / it’s another illusion / it’s coming down like the setting sun”.
Despite being universally anxiety-inducing, the song and accompanying music video make those Sunday feelings a little less isolating and definitely more bearable.
With such solid success found so early on in their career, Holy Fool is certainly on the right path for an exciting, thriving career. As they continue to consistently deliver a long line of excellent singles - ‘Winter Coat, ‘Queen of Dead’, ‘Ache’, and now ‘On A Sunday’ - listeners should prepare themselves to be stunned by whatever their next moves may be.
