Now, Summer Can Really Begin: The Dare Releases New, Frenzied Single

Previously known as Turtlenecked, American singer and musician The Dare has been gaining explosive media attention recently, with his new single ‘You’re Invited’ fuelling such.

Debuting under this initial stage name in 2016, the artist has been on the musical scene for a few years now, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought about his newfound persona, leading him on the path to enhanced fame, credibility and sharing of his musical genius.

During this time, he created the single titled ‘Girls’ and its reception was insane; it showcased how to just have fun with the making of music whilst not constraining oneself to specific genres or styles. This unique creation led Harrison Smith, the official name of the artist, to eventually produce Charli XCX’s viral song ‘Guess’ this year, before releasing his own new single ‘You’re Invited’. This single comes ahead of his soon-to-be-released album ‘What’s Wrong With New York’, one that is set to turn heads in the best of ways. All of this comes with a phenomenal fan reaction and The Dare to be associated with the revival of the indie sleaze culture, a style privileging vintage messiness and the indie music scene.

His recent release is gritty, immense and somewhat seductive. It encapsulates the raw spirit of what it means to immerse oneself in this partying culture, perhaps one that is associated with the popularised “brat” summer. It has a very cool tone, and uses instruments to not only build the song towards its point of climax, but also to compliment the messy, stylised chaos associated with him as a musician. It has heavy guitar strums, tense drum beats and a general foundation of hipster musicality.

It is truly a work of art, placing itself outside of the restrictive mainstream genres and creating a space for the Dare to uniquely occupy. The focal lyric “You’re Invited” is this irresistible rallying of humanity, one that places itself at the heart of a social culture that intends to support, encourage and bring out the best (sometimes brattiest) in each other.

The Dare is certainly an act to watch, listen to and immerse ourselves in. There is much to learn from the master of good vibes.
