Royel Otis Reflect On Their Younger Days With ‘Nack Nostalgia’

Royel Otis release the ground-breaking one-off single ‘Nack Nostalgia’ featuring all the springy guitar riffs and muffled vocals we know and love Royel Otis for.

The Australian duo have rose to fame globally in lightning speed with the success of their insane covers of ‘Murder on The Dancefloor’ by Sophie Ellis-Bextor and The Cranberries’ ‘Linger’, and with the release of their sentimentally beautiful debut album ‘PRATTS & PAIN’ earlier this year, it was only right for them to feature in the iconic Bose x NME c24 mixtape.

The band talked with NME on the release of this track and explained they wanted the song ‘‘to sound like a David Lynch film’’ and Royel and Otis have mastered just that. The repetitive, dark sounding drums play a very similar tone to the ones in theme tune to Twin Peaks which makes this single ridiculously infectious and leaving you wanting more.

Despite the 90's sound to the single, the lyrics invite you to a 00’s house party where teenagers are jumping fences and drinking too much. The word ‘Nostalgia’ in the title is taken literally as lyrics such as ‘‘Had to climb a wall, neighbour got pissed’’ reflect the behaviour from Royel and Otis’s younger years. The duo have made this song to reflect on their past making the listener also dwell on theirs, and the juxtaposing success of Royel Otis since their formation in 2019 gives the record an inspirational feeling as they look back on their lives and seeing how far they have come since their garden partying days.

‘Nack Nostalgia’ really gives us a full circle moment of the band as they reflect on their younger days whilst also achieving a monumental music industry moment making it on to NME’s playlist of the best rising stars.
