Shawn Mendes is back! After cancelling his tour in 2022 in regards to his mental health, a lot of self-reflection, and rekindling with nature, he steps back into the world of music with his new album 'Shawn' coming out on the 18th of October.
Not only did he already release two leading singles, 'Isn't That Enough' and 'Why Why Why', but in both of them he presents a very authentic and personal side he has never shown before. He is dipping his toes into the waters of country pop and succeeds greatly in it with 'Why Why Why', which resembles records like 'All My Love' by Noah Kahan or 'Look Back & Laugh' by David Kushner.
Contrary to the fun and upbeat sound he built, mainly on an acoustic guitar, and his content and clear vocals, the lyrics are raw and heartfelt. He is heavily overthinking, feeling like he didn't make any progress at all. ''Everything that hurts me's still the same / Feels like there's nothin' new for me to say''. He sings that he has ''Visions of her naked in my head / But I went off and chose myself instead'', wondering if he made the right decisions in life, even wondering why he is ''singin' songs again / Why, why, why?'' And finally drops a bombshell in the bridge that nobody expected, with ''I thought I was about to be a father'' while he himself is ''still a kid''. Mendes struggles to grasp it all, which leaves him confused and in hopes of someone to ''ease my mind''.
He bravely offers an intimate look into his introspective and overwhelming thoughts. The song starts with him audibly breathing in and ends abruptly in the middle of the line. It is a perfect way to let the audience feel his discomposure, and to wonder with him about all the unanswered questions he has.
