‘Broken Boys’ Sees The Waeve Grittier And More Haunting Than Ever Before

With warnings of the dangers of excess and recklessness, The Waeve returns with their third singleTaken from their upcoming studio album, ‘City Lights’, ‘Broken Boys’ possesses a gritty, garage rock sound that moves away from the expansive, art-rock stylings fans have heard previously.

Again produced by James Ford, ‘Broken Boys’ melds together indie rock styling with straight-up guitar-led rock, opening with heavily distorted guitars and droning synths that lead seamlessly into Dougall's hauntingly melodic vocals that are delivered so effortlessly.

They are a stark difference to Coxon’s delivery on the track. “Fuck your party / You make me wanna throw my soul away / Left in the dark so I never / No, never / Find the way out,” he sings, voice tainted with brutality and bitterness as he explores isolation and existentialism. His delivery is accompanied perfectly by Dougall’s angelic backing, “You’re dressing up just to take them down / Oh / You’re dressing up just to take them down”.

The way the two complement each other is something to behold on this track, not just vocally, but as two separate musical talents - as let’s face it - from that Blur-esque sound, you know who is playing those whammy-laden guitars without even looking.

Garage rock it may be, but the track also has a stormy, industrial sound, creating something so tense and progressive that it makes listeners teeter on the edge of anxiety, carried by the unrelenting driving beat. It has an eccentricity that the duo has deftly built with each release, a sound so bold and expansive that is uniquely theirs, deftly balancing between the ethereal and the darkness.

‘City Lights’ is due for release on September 20th via Transgressive Records and is available for pre-order here. To satiate your desire for more in the meantime, the duo have released the City Lights Sessions, a series of captivating live performances of the three singles.
