Feel The Peaks With Nina Nesbitt’s ‘Mountain Music’

Nina Nesbitt has recently released her brand-new album ‘Mountain Music’ which was delivered on September 27th 2024.

‘Mountain Music’ displays Nesbitt’s powerful vocals, and she is known for her fast-tempoed music with heart-rending lyrics. The record reflects her relatable personal journey through her twenties where she experienced heartbreak and self-discovery. Nesbitt has described ‘Mountain Music’ as her most personal work yet, and in an interview with Atwood Magazine she stated that this was “The most authentic and honest piece of work I’ve created so far”.

The title of ‘Mountain Music’ symbolises the Scottish environment but also the highs and lows which she's experienced - its an ambiguity. She demonstrates this narrative and how scary growing up can actually be; this is portrayed through the use of the lyrics of “Now I wanna run away cause I’m ‘bout two years from 30”  in the opening song ‘Pages’. ‘Anger’ is the lead single on this record. The narrative displayed throughout this song is about  wanting to let go and expand as a person - “Take hold of my heart and set it free”. Powerful vocals emphasise the emotive lyrics “cause I've got this anger inside of me and it brings me to my knees” - during this there is a passionate intense drum beat; the instrumentation is relatively minimalist as this allows her emotional lyrics and voice be the main focus.

‘Mansion’ provides themes of finding strength and reflection on life, where ‘Big Things, Small Town’ is a song that represents the difficulties that come with not living in a larger city or well known place whilst wanting to get big.

‘Parachute’, the closing track is the most relatable, heart-felt and honest song on the album The story that is displayed here is that she was wanting something to hold her down and save her however it got too much - demonstrated by the lyric “My car’s in accelerate, I wanna reverse it”. Slow piano commands the track, where the chorus is brought in by warm mellow guitar.

Overall, the record marks a shift in her musical direction as she distances herself from pop-oriented songs and more into stripped-back intimate recordings. Throughout ‘Mountain Music’ the past and present is reflected through impressive storytelling.
