Lady Gaga’s ‘Joker’ Companion Album ‘Harlequin’; A Musical Interpretation of Harley Quinn

Grammy and Oscar winner, Lady Gaga, has taken on Harley Quinn’s story in a musical sense. She has released a companion album, influenced by her character, Harlequinfor the upcoming film, Joker: Folie à Deux.

This is Gaga's first jazz-infused album since her collaborator Tony Bennett passed away. It's a sentimental, nostalgic, and exceptional record that showcases her remarkable mastery of melody and symphony. It undoubtedly succeeds as a declaration of Gaga's versatility, tying together two of her long-time passions, jazz and movies, and enhancing her reputation as a 360-degree artist for the contemporary day. You will get swept up in a world of superb music and feel a wide range of emotions while you listen.

The 13-track album comprises renditions of classic songs of ‘Get Happy’, ‘Oh, When the Saints’, ‘Smile’, ‘World on a String’, ‘That's Entertainment’, ‘The Joker’, ‘Gonna Build a Mountain’, and ‘Close to You’, as well as a mix of new material.

The album dives into various genres including jazz, rock, soul, gospel, and doo-wop, overall described as ‘vintage pop’ by Lady Gaga. It’s fascinating to listen to the Gaga move along with Harley Quinn’s multifarious moods.

‘Harlequin’, is a bold, genre-bending album that serves as a musical interpretation of the chaotic and emotionally charged world of Harley Quinn. Known for her cultural dominance in pop music, Gaga veers in a different direction here, drawing from a broad array of genres and covers that create an eclectic and theatrical sonic landscape. For listeners who associate Gaga with infectious electro-pop bangers, the shift in style is striking. Instead of synth-heavy beats, the album presents big band productions that allow Gaga’s theatrical and, at times, maniacal vocal stylings to shine.

From the first note, Gaga immerses herself in the madness of Harley Quinn’s psyche, delivering raw emotion and vocal prowess on each track. Her voice swings between sultry jazz-inspired tones and erratic outbursts, capturing both the dark humour and emotional depth of the character. This intensity, paired with stylistic shifts across the album, creates a constantly evolving listening experience. The songs range from grandiose, cabaret-style numbers to haunting ballads, reflecting Harley's unpredictability and inner turmoil.

What sets, ‘Harlequin’, apart is its fusion of show-tune razzle-dazzle with the unnerving volatility of Harley Quinn’s character. Gaga, ever the master of reinvention, brings fresh life to familiar texts, making them at once faithful and subversive. The album moves between moments of surrealism and drama, teasing out the darkness that underpins its narrative inspirations. Gaga’s theatrical flair perfectly complements the larger-than-life persona of Harley Quinn, giving fans a fascinating new entry into the character’s world.

Co-executive produced by Gaga and Michael Polansky‘Harlequin’, is an ambitious project that blends reimagined classics with original compositions, all recorded between Malibu and Las Vegas while Gaga completed her Jazz & Piano residency. The result is an album that feels like a mischievous love letter to musical theatre with a dark, twisted edge—an unexpected yet thrilling addition to Gaga’s illustrious career.

As a jazz enthusiast, this project is overall a stunning release. It’s hard to just leave it after the final note. The instrumentation is impressive, the lyricism is thought-provoking, and as each sonic is delivered with diversity, Harlequin, will hold a special place in Little Monsters hearts.

Lady Gaga has once again displayed her multifaceted artistry and prowess with this release.
