With their new single providing fans with more incredible music, the Irish band Cardinals dominate the musical scene.
This October, they have released their first piece since their EP in June, giving fans a chance to anticipate new music but feel confident in the activity of the musicians; it certainly is one for the record books. Entitled ‘Get It’, the single demonstrates their signature fusion of the forlorn nature found in angsty indie music, and true Irish folk sounds all with a hint of woeful vulnerability. Such an awesome blend is rarely found consistently in each of a band’s creations, but Cardinals find a way to succeed in this every time.
The song itself, a reflective, intense piece, finds its heart in the choral lyrics “You know it pulls us apart”, a statement encapsulating all the tribulations of love in any form. Opening with Darragh Manning’s steady beat on the drums, the melody is soon infused by guitars strumming, slowly progressing into this cacophony of sound. A sound that invites the vocals and instruments alike to melt into one another, a musical melting pot.
The opening lyrics “I, I got that speed in my brain/ I, I got you in my heart” immediately draw a listener’s attention to the corporal feelings associated with love. Fans begin to think instantly about the complete appeal and allure of the song’s subject; the heart is such a powerful tool and lyrically made imperative within the bounds of this single. As it progresses, vocalist Euan Manning explicitly describes the way that the human heart holds such great esteem in both the world inside and outside of music; the line “Never forget the power of the heart” is not only sung with such intensity and passion but also without the assistance of most instruments. Unlike the rest of the song, this line is sung almost entirely acapella, aside from one lingering bass note, and subsequently highlights just how central this concept is. Of course, it is the message of the song itself but in the wider view of our world today, it provides us with this important message of following dreams, hopes, love and ambition. It teaches us that there is a reason for a strong feeling, there is a purpose in choosing one’s heart over the head. We are human, after all, and our destiny is to love- Cardinals want to share that.
