A gig oozing with adrenaline and sweat: Aussie punk noise quartet Amyl & The Sniffers produced an unforgettably lively night showcasing their latest album ‘Cartoon Darkness’.
The Australian pub rock four-piece from Melbourne have been breaking musical and political boundaries since their formation in 2016. Their self-titled debut album was later released in 2019 featuring the beautifully chaotic anthem ‘Got You’.
2021 saw the release of one of their most profound and poignant albums ‘Comfort to Me’ that explores societal issues making it an album that fans adored due to the relatability. Earlier this month, the bands third album ‘Cartoon Darkness’ dropped with a bang filled with angst and fire that we all know and love Amyl & The Sniffers for.
The gig started with an intense atmosphere full of excitement and spirit which escalated the moment the band jumped on stage to open with ‘Doing in Me Head’ from their latest LP before lighting up the O2 Academy in Birmingham with their iconic hit ‘Freaks to the Front’. The intensity that exuberated from frontwoman Amy Taylor in her trademark ‘Tiny Bikini’ combined with the effortlessness of her performance created an unforgettable gig for adoring fans.
A pinnacle moment of the event was during ‘Knifey’, a song about the difficulties and scariness women face whilst walking home at night time. Taylor executed this with such emotion to create a quiet and intimate environment during this track which juxtaposed the rest of the set which was a gig filled with passionate power.
The ageless punk rock sound the band create make them pioneers for the Aussie pub rock scene, alongside bands like The Chats and DZ Deathrays. The heavy guitar riffs performed by Declan Mehrtens shone during ‘Security’ as he lept to the front of the stage to show off his insane talent on his ‘Flying V’ guitar as the rest of the band went wild.
Amyl & The Sniffers presented their ‘Cartoon Darkness’ tour by including the majority of the record on the setlist including the catchy singles ‘Chewing Gum’ and ‘Facts’ as fans shouted the lyrics ‘‘N.O. future’’ back to the band. The interaction between the band and the fans continued in the enthusiastic track ‘Jerkin’ as the profanity ladened opening lyrics were screamed back by eager and passionate gig goers before leading the set in to its finale. ‘Hertz’ saw the penultimate track of the setlist with fans going crazy for the frisky bass riffs and head bopping drum rhythms.
The venue was electric with passion and infatuation for the Australians zeal and impeccable ability to create such noise with reflective and inspired messages as seen in ‘Cartoon Darkness’. Amyl & The Sniffers continue their UK/EU tour throughout November before embarking on an insane world tour in 2025.
