The enigmatic I Am Your Wife! emerges from the heart of London’s underground music scene, venturing into a genre-blending soundscape with their latest release, ‘Gore Confetti’. This work crafts a dystopian world rich with steampunk and gothic influences, creating an intricate sound.
‘Splatterpunk Chic’ fuses gothic undertones with bursts of alternative rock. It opens with intricate instrumentals of monotone, minor chords in the bassline, then springs to life with a more upbeat arrangement in the chorus, only to descend back into darker tones. This cycle of repetition reflects a bleak, numbing existence, echoed in MikeWife’s monologue lyrics like “Franco stares into the eyes of a photograph // And he counts up all the consequences // The radio crackles with three days of static”.
‘When Tigers Used to Smoke’ has a nearly psychedelic feel, opening with laughter that merges into record scratches before launching into deep guitar chords. These, combined with MikeWife’s versatile vocals—ranging from monologue-like delivery to passionate, alternative rock tones—contrast with vibrant synths, creating an electronic yet hazy atmosphere. The chorus’s chord progression echoes an organ-like sound, building a bouncy rhythm that brings the track to life.
‘Drainer’ kicks off with a bold drumbeat from JezWife paired with AaronWife’s funky bass, crafting an eccentric hook. As the track unfolds, I Am Your Wife! plays with reverb to shape a trance-like soundscape. The tempo remains upbeat and energetic, driven by infectious riffs from beginning to end.
‘Monsters’ begins with a vintage radio announcement, layered over a rising background sound that adds a sense of urgency, evoking the feel of a classic monster horror film. This then fades into a dark, sombre riff, which merges with percussion and bass to create a fragmented, disjointed sound that feels both chaotic and meticulously crafted.‘Sexicated Coconut’ opens with a staggered rhythm, as the percussion and bass alternate in taking the spotlight before merging in harmony. When the dynamic guitar joins in, it creates a lush soundscape that blends the essence of 2000s emo with the edge of alternative rock.
‘Man In A Quarry’ closes the EP with a powerful bassline, layered with echoing synths and percussion that build into a burst of sound. The beat flows like water, complemented by the hypnotic repetition of the lyrics, “The crawling of his / The crawling of his skin.”
I Am Your Wife! has crafted a bold, dynamic EP with ‘Gore Confetti’ layered with diverse tonal textures. Exploring elements of goth, punk, and raw rock ‘n’ roll, they deliver an impressive and captivating collection of songs.
