Interpol celebrate 20 years of ‘Antics’ in London

Alexandra Palace saw a celebration of alternative music on Friday November 8th as New Yorkers Interpol honoured their prestigious album ‘Antics’ on its 20th anniversary tour.

The legendary trio took to the iconic London venue to perform their ground breaking discography which saw them become one of the most poignant bands in the NYC indie music scene in the late 90’s, alongside bands like The Strokes and The National.

Opening the last night of the UK leg of this sensational ‘Antics 20th Anniversary Tour’ was dust, an incomparable post punk five piece from Newcastle, Australia, who have been creating infectious experimental alternative music since 2022 and have been blossoming in success globally following the release of their debut EP ‘et cetera, etc.’  last year. To see such an eclectic band with remarkable musical talents at Alexandra Palace was a very special moment as the acoustics of the setting harmonised perfectly with dust’s beautifully idiosyncratic sound to create an unforgettable set, for fans and the band themselves.

As well as dust, we also saw Ally Pally welcome Iceage, an arty noise rock outfit from Copenhagen who entertained crowds with their vivacious presence and heavy guitar noise which was the perfect warm-up for fans of Interpol. The timeless quartet who have been releasing alternative, progressive rock since 2011 gave gig-goers a performance worthy of a headline act with frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt physically expressing every lyric he sung making their set a powerful and zestful show.

As a white curtain looms over the stage, lights start to descend to showcase Interpol’s shadows leaving the audience roaring. The curtain falls as the guitar intensifies in their hit single ‘Evil’ and Ally Pally is electrified. Adoring fans shouting the lyrics “Sandy, why can’t we look the other way?” back to the New Yorkers in such a beautiful and iconic building was a moment truly unforgettable for gig goers.

Interpol continued their setlist and performed ‘Antics’ in full with the seamless transitions and effortless vocals from Paul Banks that fans know and love. It was an emotional and solely unique experience hearing the album from start to finish on such a monumental tour for the band and the admiration for the (now) three-piece exuberated from fans who have been cherishing them for two decades.

The corresponding lights to the vivacious tracks made an incredible sensory experience. The infamous Interpol songs alongside a light show that matched the lyrics was spell bounding. During ‘Public Pervert’, the lights shone around the room twinkling in every direction to resemble the line “Then, through stars, we will navigate through the holes in your eyes” which created an atmosphere like no other and left fans in awe of the production.
A quintessential and unforgettable night was had for Interpol adorers as we spectated their ageless sounds and musical artistry, leaving fans excited to see what the next 20 years of Interpol will bring.
