Transportive and vulnerable, girlpuppy’s latest single ‘Windows’ speaks to yearning for irretrievable memories of the past.
Becca Harvey, the Atlanta-based talent behind girlpuppy, plays into the atmosphere of coping with a breakup – the nostalgia, the vengefulness, the dreary-eyed lovesickness.
‘Windows’ finds solace in being balanced and varied – sometimes it’s nothing but warm guitar, sometimes it’s the entire band and layered vocals. Recognisably a song regarding longing, ‘Windows’ still confidently maintains a playful and self-assured tone. Humour rears its head amongst tenseness, appearing in lyrics like “However much I may miss you, / You’ll always have to miss me more”. girlpuppy’s sound is assertive yet mellow, with elements of shoegaze influence echoing the likes of Mazzy Star and My Bloody Valentine.
Embarking on an honest and sentimental path, ‘Windows’ is a track which leaves its mark through catchiness. It demands to be relistened to, always through a new lens. The track simmers into the bridge, one which presents a raw and direct confession to a lover. This section draws lyrical inspiration from Fleetwood Mac’s iconic break-up track ‘Silver Springs’: “You are my Silver Spring / No matter what you do, you will always hear me sing”, paying homage to the heartache Stevie Nicks endured.
girlpuppy’s newest track ‘Windows’ embodies staring out into the distance on a drive, pensively contemplating every decision you have made and your own position in the world.
