Gone are the days of ‘Love And Compromise’, her 2019 debut album title, or sticking to ‘Terms & Conditions’, her 2023 single; finding ‘Pressure Points’ is the new way to tackle issues.
Mahalia has been instrumental in the UK R&B scene for many years now since her first release six years ago. Likewise, Lila Iké has been a significant figure in Reggae for her native country Jamaica and internationally too.
If the Leicester vocalist’s previous single ‘Pick Up The Pace’ tested the Reggae waters, ‘Pressure Points’, much like its water-filled music video, takes a deep dive. The keys, guitar strums and intentional offbeat swing all add up to craft an ideal temperature-inducing record.
The track opens with a spoken introduction,“I’m here to please my man and my man is also here to please me”, and this feels like a great precursor for the next three minutes ahead. It’s very apparent Mahalia is a wordsmith, finding two different ways to add ‘Pressure’ into the chorus, swooning, “Baby won’t you come and find my pressure points / I’m not tryna put no pressure on you boy”. Iké tries her hand at this too, “This boy a pressure me mind / Make you no just come pressure me line”.
Both collaborators have a raw vocal style, this helps deliver and execute this song, adopting an everything-on-the-table approach. Ideal when discussing taboo topics covered in this song. If by any chance a certain self-procclaimed luvergirl is reading this, please fire one of those Mahalia branded lime green candles my way ASAP!
