Viagra Boys are back with 'Man Made Of Meat', the first taste of their upcoming studio album, 'viagr aboys'. A wild, guttural anthem that reminds us why they’re punk’s reigning kings of chaos. The Swedish band doesn’t just write songs; they light a match, pour gasoline, and let it burn, and this track is no exception.
Having performed 'Man Made Of Meat' live since June of last year, Viagra Boys have finally unleashed it upon the world. Frontman Sebastian Murphy's signature blend of dark humor and biting satire, all layered over razor-sharp guitars and a satisfyingly heavy bassline. In his unmistakable style, Murphy tackles the absurdities and anxieties of modern life under capitalism with lines like, “I am a man that’s made of meat / And you’re on the internet looking at feet.”
The track is a rollercoaster of absurd yet incisive commentary, with Murphy referencing everything from McDonald’s and Friends actor Matthew Perry’s death, “They watch TV, they watch TV about a man named Chandler Bing/ Who died in a freak hot tubbing accident/ And spent his time drinking hot dog flavoured water/ On a popular TV show called Tub Girls”, to bizarre exploits like trying to score free women’s sweaters from L.L. Bean. The result is a track that’s as hilarious as it is unsettling, reflecting the band’s knack for turning chaotic storytelling into an art form. It’s messy, unapologetic, and more alive than anything else you’ll hear this week.
And let’s talk about the music video, because it’s just as unhinged as the song. Murphy plays an “accidental artist” in a gallery setting, and in true Viagra Boys style, the visuals balance shock value with a self-aware sense of humour.
If 'Man Made Of Meat' is a taste of what’s coming on their next album, it’s clear these guys aren’t here to play nice. They’re here to rip the world apart and make us laugh about it while they’re at it. Their last record, 'Cave World', was a psychedelic punk masterpiece, but this? This feels dirtier, rawer, like it’s been scraped straight from the gutter.
The band has also shared the dates of their Infinite Anxiety Tour, which begins at Coachella in April, before skirting off to Europe. Catch it if you can, because Viagra Boys live are nothing short of electric.
