Sunflower Bean Embrace Grit and Glamour on 'Champagne Taste'

Sunflower Bean are kicking off 2025 with a bold new direction, and their latest single, 'Champagne Taste', is clear proof. Known for their dreamy, psychedelic sound, they've turned up the intensity with raw guitar riffs and soaring power chords that instantly grab your attention. 

The track, a ferocious blend of garage rock energy and stadium-sized ambition, serves as the first taste of their upcoming album, 'Mortal Primetime', set for release on April 25 via Lucky Number.

From the very first note, 'Champagne Taste' feels like a statement of intent. Driven by distorted, fuzzy guitar riffs and an unapologetically punchy beat, the song crackles with attitude. Julia Cumming’s vocals exude confidence and defiance, delivering lines that embody the band’s resilience: "You get to decide what your prime is / and you fight for it". And fight they have, crafting a song that's both raw and triumphant.

There’s a palpable sense of reinvention here: less ethereal, more visceral, with an unrelenting energy that harks back to the rawer side of '70s punk while still feeling undeniably modern. It’s electric, it’s anthemic, and it feels like Sunflower Bean is done playing it safe—this is their main character moment.

The track was self-produced by the band, with mixing from Caesar Edmunds (The Killers, Wet Leg) and engineering by Sarah Tudzin (Illuminati Hotties, boygenius). It’s the sound of a band reclaiming their space and cranking the volume to 11. Gone are the hazy daydreams of their earlier work, this is all sweat, glitter, and a neon-drenched future. Sunflower Bean is clearly evolving, pushing past their previous sonic boundaries while retaining the unique charm that set them apart.

With 'Champagne Taste', Sunflower Bean are signaling the start of a new era— one defined by reinvention, determination, and a sound that’s bigger and bolder than ever.
