Peckham-born British electronic, R&B, and dubstep artist, and former Brit School alumnus Kathleen Anne Brien, better known as Katy B, is back with a brilliant brand new single. You may recall her earlier work such as ‘Lights On’, ‘Katy On A Mission’, and ‘Easy Please Me’. Even her hit song with DJ KDA and British rapper Tinie Tempah, ‘Turn The Music Louder (Rumble)’ may ring a bell. ‘Under My Skin’ provides a great way for Katy B to make her long-awaited return.
As a single, 'Under My Skin', also offers something different with regard to Katy B’s evolution as an artist. Though it simultaneously does not stray too far from her musical roots. She works wonders on this track so thumbs up to her. If you compare it to the dance-inspired tracks from her first album, listeners will notice there is some experimentation here, though she remains somewhat faithful to what she has done in the past.
As a singer, Katy B, has an impressive vocal range which cuts straight through, and she can certainly hold a high note. Vocally, she is the musical equivalent to milk and honey. This latest track is a fantastic offering, and a much-welcomed return to the charts, as well as our ears.
Regarding the subject matter, Katy B has chosen to write about something which many people will be all too familiar with. She delves deep into a once-happy relationship that slowly became toxic. Listeners will empathise and hope that the one person who caused the pain and upset will get what is coming to them. Lyrically, there are a couple of lines in the song, including the chorus itself, which reference this sense of pain: “The beginning of the end, the moment I let you in/Let you in, under my skin”.
Katy B’s new single, ‘Under My Skin’, is taken from her upcoming album of which the title is yet to be announced. If this song is anything to go by, then I cannot wait to hear the rest of its tracks!
