Calling all They Might Be Giants fans, they MIGHT have released a new single and you MIGHT just love it!
In the build up to their 23rd studio album ‘BOOK’, which as the title suggests, is going to accompany a 144-page book, They Might Be Giants’ critically acclaimed duo of Johns- John Flansburgh and John Linnell, have released new single ‘Part of You Wants to Believe Me’.
Anyone who knows They Might Be Giants knows that they have consistently produced material full of wit, cleverness and catchiness from their first album release in 1986, to their last album ‘I Like Fun’, released in 2018. Fans will be pleased to know that this bop does not deviate from this pattern, producing lyrical highlights such as “part of you wants to believe me, but part of you
isn't yet totally off of your meds” and the accompanying self-aware quip “part of you senses that all of this story is totally making no sense”.
Behind these lyrics, the song itself is bouncy and synthy, which feels like an ode to classic They Might Be Giants’ material: something under 3 minutes long with a melody that gets stuck in your head all day. It is the perfect blend of being silly but not too silly so that mainstream listeners, not accustomed to tracks like Dr Worm (“I'm not a real doctor, but I am a real worm”), are not alienated. Here’s to hoping the rest of the ‘BOOK’ and its accompanying book keep up the They Might Be Giants magic we’ve seen since 1985!
‘BOOK’ is due to be released on the 12th November.
