Gorillaz continues their intricate storyline with groovy funk-fest ‘Cracker Island’

Gorillaz are a band that needs no introduction, their massive discography spans back to the early 2000s and includes legendary hits like ‘Feel Good Inc’ and ‘Clint Eastwood’.

Created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, the fictional band comprised of Murdoc, 2D, Russel, and Noodle has featured in many a party playlist over the years, and with the help of bass legend Thundercat, ‘Cracker Island’ is about to join in with the festivities.

The intriguing element surrounding Gorillaz is their continuing storyline, ‘Cracker Island' sets out to continue that storyline, focusing on a mysterious island and a cult, in which the band has not only become members of - but even invited their fans to join too

The piece itself is a real foot-tapper, it comes complete with a groovy, disco-esque sound, which is only aided by Thundercats funky bass and smooth vocals. It's a bouncing dance funk song that modulates with its’ macabre lyrics. There’s some great contrast between Albarn and Thundercats' vocals, creating a nice sense of diversity in the tracks’ speech. The song’s real showcase is its grooving robust bassline, courtesy of Thundercat, complete with its slick, complex sound, it gives the track a real sense of tempo.

‘Cracker Island’ is a fantastic record that fits right into Gorillaz ever-expanding discography. Its whacky sound and plotline feel right at home, and the track itself is a groovy funk-fest with some clear disco influences which will find itself played at plenty of parties, like so many Gorillaz tracks before it.
