An Emotional Cleanse Lies At The Heart Of Lizzy McAlpine’s Latest Single

Lizzy McAlpine continually graces the musical industry with new, impressive, amazingly creative tracks. Her discography includes the viral single ‘Ceiling’ with over 600 million streams on Spotify alone. This is a perfect example of how social media can truly influence an artist’s career, and no one deserves this recognition more than McAlpine; she never fails to create this beautiful melancholic sound to lie underneath lyrics that break hearts.

Recently, the artist has released a new track titled ‘Pushing It Down and Praying’, one that continues her impressive streak of music production. After writing her first album studying abroad in 2019 and releasing it the following year, McAlpine always finds the beauty in even the most woeful of life’s struggles.

This new single is just the most perfect fusion of a want for deeper connection and an entrapment in the idealised world of physical satisfaction. She sings firstly of “laying down, naked” with her current partner, someone with whom she has a surface level connection, but it doesn’t feel like anything more. It’s as though her body and her skin are in love but her heart is completely disregarded in this relationship. This is when the guilt sets in, or rather she hopes for it to set in. The lyrics “I wanna feel guilty/ I wanna feel that it’s wrong” open up the listener to this concept of not loving the person you feel that you should. A thought pattern of being emotionally distant even when physically close to another person; once again we see just how raw and hauntingly truthful McAlpine can be with her music. These lyrics are almost immediately followed by “I wanna sing a different song”, a sorrow-filled, alluring line exposing the true desire of being with another person, leading fans to a definite conclusion: this current relationship is purely for show.

There is hopeless love, a desire for guilt, endings and potential beginnings thrown in this musical mixing bowl, and fans could not be more in love. They could not be more grateful for McAloine’s exposure of her humanity; perhaps it is this track that our hearts will follow entirely.
