The boy band, created by singer Nicole Scherzinger, was formed of Payne and other singers Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson. In a video released in 2022 of the group’s formation, Scherzinger collected the boys individually stating: “They’re like little stars. You can’t get rid of little stars, so you put them all together”.
One Direction would become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. They released five albums, ‘Up All Night’ (2011), ‘Take Me Home’ (2012), ‘Midnight Memories’ (2013), ‘Four’ (2014), and ‘Made in the A.M’. (2015), touring the world and hitting record-breaking chart numbers. After Malik’s departure in 2015 to live a normal and private life, the band inevitably went on a hiatus in 2016.
As someone who grew up with One Direction, their music was more than just entertainment; it shaped my friendships, my travels, and even my career choices. Last night's news was a reminder of the deep impact Payne and his bandmates have had on my life. As an American from California, I was extremely influenced by One Direction and it led me to move to London and pursue a career in the music industry. I wrote my MA dissertation on fandoms, and yes, One Direction. I think part of me still thought there would be a chance of a reunion.
Although Liam Payne became a complicated person after the band went on hiatus, he still managed to bring so much joy to his fans. In 2017, Payne reached Number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Strip That Down’. He later released a solo album, ‘LP1’, in 2019 and has since collaborated with J Balvin, French Montana, Dixie D’Amelio, Quavo, and more. Payne was more than an artist; he was a father, philanthropist, and a free spirit.
In 2017 Payne and Girls Aloud singer Cher Lloyd had their son, Bear. Although he and Lloyd did not remain together, Payne leaned into his fatherhood duties and even in his One Direction days always looked forward to being a “young dad”. Before his passing he was dating influencer Kate Cassidy who was on the trip with him in Argentina. They were in the country to see former One Direction star Niall Horan’s performance on October 4th.
Beneath the fame and music, Payne spoke publicly of his mental health issues, alcoholism, and suicidal ideation. In 2023, he stated that he had been sober for over three months. In interviews he tackled his life after One Direction and the fact that his youth was over. In speaking so candidly about his struggles, Payne gave voice to the complex realities of fame and growing up in the public eye. His passing feels like the end of our youths for many fans, myself included, yet his legacy lives on through the music, memories, and connections he helped create. Rest easy, Liam—you will be forever young in the hearts of those who loved you.
