Seven Questions with Ellur

Everyone's favourite Yorkshire darling, Ellur has had an incredible past 12 months - from supporting Robbie Williams, to releasing her highly anticipated EP, 'God Help Me Now', she's on an unstoppable trajectory that's seen her become a steadfast one-to-watch on the indie music scene.

As part of the Seven Questions with Music Is To Blame Series, Ellur discusses her contemporary sound and contemplates on her 'desert island' albums.

Introduce yourself and where you're from.

I'm Ellur and I'm from Halifax, West Yorkshire. It's pronounced like 'Ella' but in a Yorkshire accent.

What do our readers need to know about you?

I make honest music with the intent of connecting with people. It's all inspired by my love of the classic sounds of 80s/90s and the more contemporary, current pop that's made by the women of today. Like Jeff Buckley meets CMAT or The Smashing Pumpkins meets Lola Young. I also make really good blueberry pancakes.

What have you got coming up that you’re most excited for?

I'm finally about to start recording my debut album and I've been working on it for years. I've spent the last three months building a sketchbook of ideas and things I'm inspired by in preparation for it. I'm also really excited about the shows I've got booked for this year. SXSW in March and lots of Festivals in summer. It feels like years of really hard work are finally paying off.

What’s the best run-in you’ve had with a fan?

Any run-ins I have with fans are good ones. I love meeting them, they're always really cool.

What’s been your biggest ‘I’ve made it’ moment so far?

I would've said the crowd I had at Leeds and Reading Festival last year but more recently it's been the EP release. The response to 'God Help Me Now' has been so overwhelmingly positive. This January also marks five years of me releasing music and I remember people saying to me when I first started, 'give it five years and see where you're at'. Now I'm writing and playing alongside some of my favourite writers and artists. I'm living the dream.

What are your three “desert island” albums?

'In Rainbows' - Radiohead

'A Rush Of Blood to the Head' - Coldplay

'No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire' - Dora Jar

Sum up your sound in three words.

Honest. Anthemic. Yorkshire.
