Alien Chicks, a trio known for their ability to fuse genres like punk, math rock, Latin, rap, and jazz, return to the scene with the announcement of their new EP, ‘Forbidden Fruit,’ due for release on May 9th. Quickly establishing themselves as an addictive energy in the punk genre, the Brixton-based band give us a taste of the fruits of their labour with their latest single, ‘Donkeyhead’.
Originating from a fever dream, ‘Donkeyhead’ kicks straight into action, submerging you into the surreal, teetering on the edge of paranoia through the track’s driving beat. The unrelenting punk energy is dizzying, from the roar of drums and the noise of guitars to the insistent vocals.
Yet, the track (in a characteristically Alien Chicks way) refuses to stay in one lane. It takes diversions throughout, not just stylistically with flairs of the dramatic with rock opera-esque interludes and calming melodic jazz sections, but also lyrically as topics shift from home invasions to the lack of bins in North London.
It’s unsettling, it’s creative, and it’s utterly addictive. One thing is clear: Alien Chicks are re-defining experimental in their chaotic and dramatic offerings, and if their latest work is anything to go by, their EP is set to be nothing short of incredible. ‘Forbidden Fruit’ will be available on May 9th via Hideous Mink Records and SO Recordings.
