A release capable of taking the world by storm overnight and vying for the spotlight on the evening of the 67th Grammy Awards could only come from the visionary that is Lady Gaga.
‘Abracadabra’, released alongside a music video strikingly reminiscent of her 2009 hit ‘Bad Romance’, swiftly disrupted the music scene that tends to slumber in the late winter, dishing up a reminder of the pop legend’s remaining stronghold on the industry.
The accompanying video showcases Gaga adorned in contrasting red and white coutures, perhaps a nod to the dual personas and amalgamation of her eclectic styles she’s been striving to resurrect through her latest material. While the song is undoubtedly forecast to become a club anthem, true to Gaga’s signature style, there is so much more to unpack beneath its pulsating beats, witchy lyrics, and foreboding vocals.
The track comes as a follow up from ‘Disease’, a similarly dark hit that laid the foundations for a stronger and more upbeat number like ‘Abracadabra’. However, this eerie - and in equal parts provocative - energy has been weaved into Gaga’s discography ever since her earliest material; think ‘Bloody Mary’, ‘Monster’, and ‘Judas’.
Alluding to folklore, tragedy, and enchantment - “Like a poem said by a lady in red / You hear the last few words of your life / With a haunting dance, now you're both in a trance / It's time to cast your spell on the night” - the track is layered with rich spiritual imagery and the captivating otherworldliness that the star has become so synonymous with.
In this sense, ‘Abracadabra’ feels like Gaga’s successful attempt at designing a more matured version of an outrageous yet prime chapter of her musical career - and it’s no surprise that fans around the world are thrilled to see such a sonic shift from her more romantic and polished cinematic endeavours of late.
While 2024 was undoubtedly the year of rising pop princesses, with the Grammys spotlighting the newest talent on the scene from Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, Gaga’s long-awaited return is poised to steal the spotlight in 2025. Her daring and quintessentially eccentric comeback promises not only to shape the year's music scene but to cement her status as a timeless force in any pop revival.
