Ahead of the BRIT awards in a few weeks, nominee and breakout English star Rachel Chinouriri is further cementing herself in the indie music scene. The singer, who began her career on Soundcloud, has released a fresh new take on her song ‘All I Ever Asked of You’ , which originally came out in 2022. The initial upbeat melody and tone of the song have transformed it into a different version of itself with the help of a new collaborator: sombr.
Sombr is from Los Angeles but lives in New York. As a fellow alternative and indie self-producing music maker, sombr and Chinouriri’s collaboration has added a darker layer to the song.
The track is about the end of a relationship and the sorrow and hurt that follow. Chinouriri sings about how she gave everything to her partner, only wanting to be loved and giving her love in return. There are deep emotions but an overall sense of strength.
In this new version, the song, quite metaphorically, has a more somber tone. Sombr’s verse, adding “You gave up on me too easily / I always try to make it right even though you never wanted apologies” is the second point of view initially missing from the first version of the song. Now, from the perspective of the other person in the relationship, we can see both sides were yearning all along, and neither can understand what went wrong.
This new rendition is beautiful, and with a male’s voice, one can hear so many new harmonies and layers that add so much more emotion. We hope to hear more from Chinouriri like this and, hopefully, more collaborations with sombr in the future.
Chinouriri has been nominated for both Artist of the Year and Best New Artist at the BRIT awards. She also has announced a North American tour that will begin in May, and she will open for Sabrina Carpenter at her show in London this March.
