The Pop, the Punk and The So Over It Attitude: Julia Kate’s New Single ‘Fake Friends’

Julia Kate, a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Sherman Oaks, California, embodies  the spirit of a true Valley girl. She showcases her dynamic talent through a fusion of pop and ‘80s new wave, delivering high-energy performances with each track.

Her music blends an infectious, girl power charm with a melodic captivating sound.

‘Fake Friends’ toys with genre and tempo, opening with a dynamic bassline and crisp, static drums that create a funky, driving rhythm that exudes ‘80s new wave flair. The instrumentals cleverly shift between a subdued, rhythmic groove, surging  into a lively tempo and energetic wave of airy electric guitars that give ‘Fake Friends’ a girl pop-rock edge and an Avril Lavigne aura.

Julia Kate’s almost talk-singing delivery channels a ‘70s punk attitude with a modern edge. Her matter of fact vocal style enhances the song’s theme of confronting a fake friendship and finally letting go. Lyrics like, “All I know is Fake Friends make me feel more alone / And you can go / Don’t have my back and just like that / I know I hate coming back”, further emphasises this sentiment.

With her bold sound and unapologetic attitude, Julia Kate delivers a fresh take on pop, blending infectious energy with raw emotion. ‘Fake Friends’ showcases her ability to craft a dynamic, genre-blending track that is both catchy and relatable. As she continues to carve out her place in the music scene, Julia Kate proves she’s an artist with vision—unafraid to speak her mind and set her own rhythm.
