Following the release of their second album ‘City Lights’ (2024), The Waeve announced their latest EP ‘Eternal’ with the single ‘Love Is All Pain’.
The stunningly synth-heavy track debuted on Valentine’s Day, yet it’s far from the expectations of romance and flowers; instead, Coxon and Dougall lament the complexities of love.
Utilising Dougall’s siren-like vocals, the track acts as a weary warning to hopeless romantics of the intoxicating and all-consuming effects of love, with whispered promises of dreams coming true and eternal life.
“Oh! Love is all pain / Thought I’d escaped it / But I need it again / It’s hard, it’s hard / It’s harder than hell,” sing the duo in the chorus, vocals a sharp departure from the angelic call of Dougall, showing the agonising dependency we can have for love.
The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Simon Leeder that perfectly channels the balance of bleakness of the track's subject matter. Shot in South East London’s iconic Brutalist estate at Southmere Lake in Thamesmead, the 8mm film stylistically channels the post-punk synth-era aesthetic with flashes of grain-heavy landscapes.
The combination of fuzz-heavy guitars, flaming synth flourishes, and a sultry saxophone section make the track utterly addictive; we as listeners fall victim to the paralysing effects of the duo’s combined spell. ‘Eternal’ will be released on March 14 via Transgressive and can be pre-ordered / pre-saved here.
