Behind girlpuppy stands Becca Harvey, Atlanta-based indie-rocker, singer and songwriter. ‘Since April’ is the fourth released song from her second album ‘Sweetness’, coming out March 28th. Alex Farrar was heavily involved in the making of ‘Since April’, being co-writer alongside Tom Sinclair, while playing drums, bass, keyboards, guitars and glockenspiel.
While her first EP ‘Swan’ and her first album ‘When I’m Alone’ were melodic and gentle in tempo and lyrics, her second album ‘Sweetness’ is a clean cut from the folklore-vibes of her previous works.
Just like ‘Windows’, her most current single also incorporates elements of shoegaze while focusing more on heaving guitar and drums as well as pop-rock elements. The song deals with a relationship gone bad and the feeling of longing for closeness and closure as can be seen in the lyrics “You want to pretend that I never existed / That we never happened, but we did”. The song is underlined by the music video directed by Miles Robbins. Here the main character, played by Becca Harvey herself, is treated as an experiment, having to undergo daily tests. The suffering of fighting through the remaining pieces of a breakup while being hit with memories of the once so dearly loved one is captured on such a raw level. The impressive video ends with the main character escaping from the lab and going into the wildlife possibly looking for a new path to go.
With her upcoming shows there will be a few chances to grab a ticket and see girlpuppy live, to experience the new path she takes musically. While the music video ends with the protagonist getting free of the haunting memories in the lab, girlpuppy herself will continue to make her own path with her shoegaze-indie music, creating lyrics that are reflecting on her own development.
